Inter-generational philanthropy

The initial seed of Seed The Change | He Kākano Hāpai was planted by Dr. Maarire Goodall, with his son Anake and mokopuna Awhioraki growing this familial instinct. During his lifetime Maarire dedicated his work to relentlessly address inequities and social justice issues, focusing especially on the areas of indigenous rights and healthcare. As a Renaissance Man, Maarire's interests were manifold. Here we highlight one of his significant and enduring initiatives.

The Dunedin-based New Zealand Institute for Cancer Research Trust was formed in 1986, with the aim of establishing a fund to encourage and support cancer research in Aotearoa New Zealand in perpetuity.

Along with the University of Otago, the Trust funds the Professorial Chair in Cancer Pathology at Otago’s Dunedin School of Medicine.

The Trust's capital base, and therefore its capacity to advance cancer research, has increased considerably through ongoing bequests received since its establishment.
